On October 6, KIST (President Lee Byung Gwon) and Intellectual Discovery Inc. (CEO Kim Kwang-jun) entered into an agreement of work cooperation at the head office of KIST in Seoul.
Intellectual Discovery Inc. is a patent management agency established with joint investment between the government and the private sector, which is the first of its kind in Korea. KIST agreed to collaborate with Intellectual Discovery Inc. in order to provide its pool of various intellectual properties (IP pool) to support the commercialization of basic & source technologies owned by Korean companies and also promote joint use of dormant patents. In addition, KIST will work together with the IP experts of Intellectual Discovery Inc.in order to acquire patents on the research outcomes of KIST.
President Lee Byung Gwon of KIST said at the signing ceremony “Our cooperation with Intellectual Discovery Inc. will set the foundation where the source patents of KIST can be used in a more specialized and systematic manner, thereby contributing to increasing the utilization of patents and strengthening businesses’ competitiveness in patents.”
CEO Kim Kwang-jun of Intellectual Discovery Inc. said “Patents are getting ever more important in global business. If the source technologies of state-funded research institutes are made available through an IP expert group, it will help Korean companies to resolve patent disputes with overseas companies. Plus, state-funded research institutes could enhance the efficiency of research work by more actively licensing their source technologies to overseas companies through IP experts.”
