KIST Europe, authorized NST's Research Basecamp for promoting joint R&D in Europe
- KOR-GER Joint R&D grant ‘Global Challenges, Global
Responses’ from NST
- NST’s clear message to make KIST Europe a research
basecamp for the 25 GRI’s in Europe
National Research Council of Science & Technology
(President Bok Chul Kim, hereinafter ‘NST’) and KIST Europe
Forschungsgesellschaft mbH (Director Soo Hyun Kim, hereinafter KIST Europe)
have been planned joint R&D schemes to promoting international research
collaboration activities between GRI’s in Korea and research organizations in
Germany.
In July 2022, their plan led to release a project,
under the slogan of ‘Global Challenges, Global Responses’, specifically
addressing global issues such as infectious diseases, energy transition. One of
main conditions at the evaluation process is the joint research organizations
must send research personnel by utilizing KIST Europe for conducting their
projects on the spot in Europe.
As a result of the evaluation on the research area
‘energy transition’, the ‘development of zinc-based battery system using ionic
liquid’ jointly planned by the Helmholtz Jülich Research Center, the
Korea Institute of Energy Research, and KIST Europe was selected as the first
Global Agenda Project funded by National Research Council of Science &
Technology. This project will be supported with a maximum of 400 million KRW
each year for 3 years and a total of 1.2 billion KRW.
This project aims to improve the performance,
durability, and safety of zinc-based batteries by developing new electrolytes
including ionic liquids. The KIST Europe conducts research on the composition
and synthesis of ionic liquid electrolytes, the Helmholtz Julich Research
Center will analyze the interfacial reaction between the electrode and the
electrolyte through experiments and computational science, and the Korea
Institute of Energy Research will conduct performance evaluation and system
research of zinc-based batteries.
Furthermore,
the ‘Collaboration Seed Grant’ from NST,
integrated the ‘KOR-EU Research Initiative program’ based on KIST Europe was
continuously promoted. It is a scheme for preliminary cooperation, which could
be developed into a large-scale international R&D Project, under the motto
‘Utilizing GRI’s overseas Infrastructure of KIST Europe actively’.
In August 2022, four projects are granted, which support to promote Korean and European scientists to make a sketch on planning of international joint research. The budget is up to 100 million won and it will be provided for each project for a year.
● Project titles and partners
1) Global scientific network enhancement to establish the neurotoxicity test platform of hazard materials with the advanced technology
(KIT – KIST Europe - FH Münster)
2) Electromagnetic single-chip fine control of anisotropic colloidal systems
(KIST Europe – France CNRS)
3) Development of a biomaterial-based in vitro artificial liver tissue model for immune associated toxicity screening
(KIT – KIST Europe – Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry)
4) Establishment of cardiotoxicity evaluation platforms for hazardous chemical substances based on non-animal testing
(KIT – KIST – KIST Europe - KIMS – Max Planck Molecular Biomedicine)
Dr. Indong Jun, carrying out the project ‘Establishment
of cardiotoxicity evaluation platforms for hazardous chemical substances based
on non-animal testing’ from ‘Collaboration Seed Grant’ as a senior researcher of Environmental
Safety Group at KIST Europe,
We have confidence to make KIST Europe as an excellent
basecamp for joint research and i will contribute to the expansion of global
joint research projects, based on the NST’s continuous PR strategies.
Dr. Soo Hyun Kim, Director of KIST Europe, also
explained that we have been developed our own motto ‘promoting Research
cooperation between Korea and EU’ under the name of ‘Korea-EU Joint R&D Center’, ‘Global Test
Bed’, and ‘Korea-EU Research Cooperation Initiative’ over years, according to
the purpose of Institute establishment.
He appealed that such effort was matched the NST’s
agenda ‘making an international research hub by using national infrastructure’
so that the project grants were achieved, because we got successfully localized
over years.
Lastly, he mentioned that KIST Europe is ready to offer
own research capacities and a stage, where Korean and European researchers
freely come to communicate and feasible research themes are to create.
