KIST and GTC Host the 2017 Meeting on International Cooperation for Science and Technology Development
- Discussions on promoting joint climate technology R&D and overseas commercialization
On September 25, at its Seoul headquarters, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), along with the Green Technology Center (GTC), hosted the 2017 Meeting on International Cooperation for Science and Technology Development. The event highlighted joint international climate technology R&D and strategies for overseas commercialization. It was sponsored by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the National Research Council of Science & Technology (NST), and it was attended by science diplomats and members of government-funded research institutes involved with climate technology.
The meeting consisted of two sessions: 1) “Cases of International Research Collaboration on Climate Technology and Proposals for Further Implementation” and 2) “Cases of Climate Technology Cooperation Overseas and Proposals for Further Implementation.” KIST explained its joint research projects with the Italian National Agency for New Technologies (ENEA) and the Dutch Watercycle Research Institute (KWR) in hopes of further encouraging similar international joint research. Furthermore, MSIT’s Climate Technology Localization Project, which is being conducted by GTC, was introduced to promote effective strategies for providing aid to developing countries.
Furthermore, attendees were given opportunities to network and seek out support channels for meeting their respective countries’ demands for research and technology.
Dr. Lee Byung Gwon, president of KIST, said, “As a result of this meeting, I expect to see increases in joint research and the commercialization of climate technology. Through mutual cooperation, KIST will continue seeking out demand-oriented collaborative projects that meet the current needs of the international community.”
Dr. Oh In-Hwan, president of GTC, added, “My hope is that this meeting will bring together international science diplomats and domestic researchers, make Korea a leader in field of climate technology, and spread such technology to developing countries.”
The meeting has been held annually since 2011, fostering information-sharing on foreign aid and promoting discussions on global S&T development. KIST’s ultimate aim is to offer potential solutions to global issues and encourage greater international cooperation.
