KIST and MAS Strengthen Cooperative Ties
On June 19, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (MAS) entered into a MoU for strengthening cooperative ties with each other.
KIST President Lee Byung Gwon and MAS President Duger Regdel agreed to further cement their partnership through personnel exchanges and active R&D cooperation. In particular, the two parties discussed how KIST can cooperate with the Mongolian government in commercializing medicinal herbs.
Ever since 2002―with support from the Korean Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning―KIST and MAS have been jointly conducting the Korea-Mongolia Science & Technology Cooperation Center Project. They also conducted joint research into such things as Mongolian medicinal herbs, and engaged in personnel exchanges (e.g., expert exchanges, graduate student training, technical training, etc.).
Dr. Nho Chu-Won, leader of the aforementioned project, said, “Our efforts to create high added-value by combining Mongolia’s natural resources with Korea’s industrialization technology have recently resulted in some remarkable outcomes. This MoU further increases the global competitiveness of both Korea and Mongolia through the determining of new areas of cooperation and the securing of raw materials.”
Examples of S&T cooperation between the two countries include the fact that KIST’s International R&D Academy (IRDA) trained a number of outstanding Mongolian students, including five at the graduate level. In addition, KIST donated its under-used equipment to the National University of Mongolia, and it provided R&D funding for commercializing Mongolian medicinal herbs.
KIST President Lee Byung Gwon described the MoU as a “win-win for the two countries’ S&T development."
