KIST Holds 14th Hongneung Forum
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Dr. Seok-Jin Yoon) held the 14th Hongneung Forum on December 3 at KIST's headquarters in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, under the theme of "Cooperation Plan for the Revitalization of the Hongneung Area & Innopolis, and Urban Regeneration Project.”
Hongneung Innopolis, Korea’s first research complex of its
kind, is located in the Hongneung district of Seoul and possesses more than 5,000
Ph.D. level researchers and a budget for advanced R&D of KRW 1.5 trillion. Following
its designation as part of the Hongneung Urban Regeneration New Deal Project in
2019 and Hongneung Innoopolis in 2020, the complex has drawn attention for its potential
to be an innovative global medical cluster.
There has been a great deal of interest both domestically
and internationally in this year's Forum, due to the proposal of a new leap
forward for the Hongneung district. Key institutions and personnel from Seoul's
metropolitan and local governments, along with the heads of the 18 forum member
institutions, are expected to come up with specific measures for the
development and growth of the Hongneung area.
At the forum, Dr. Chi Ho Choi, Director-General of KIST's
HongReung Innotown Operation Division, and Mr. Young Mi Kim, the Head of the
Startup Valley Promotion Division at the Seoul Housing & Communities
Corporation, presented strategies for the development of Hongneung Special
R&D Zones and for urban regeneration.
Professor Seiyong Kim of Korea University presided as Chair
of the panel, with panel members discussing specific plans related to the topics
of urban design, bio, culture and art, academic cooperation, and strategic
projects under the theme of expanding and linking cooperative projects for the Hongneung
area. Panelists included Prof. KeeTaig Jung of Kyung Hee University, Mr. Chung
Yeon Cho, Planning Director for Korea National University of Arts, Mr. Sung Kyu
Ko, representative for Hongneung area companies, and Ms. Ji Yeon Kim, Planning Director
for Seoul National University of Science and Technology. In addition, they
discussed ways for the Hongneung Research Complex, which has served as a think
tank for national S&T and economic development for the past half-century, to
take a leap forward to become the only research complex in Seoul that focuses
on Korean innovation. Furthermore, they encouraged the local and national governments
to continue to show their support and provide cooperation for the effort.
In his opening speech, Dr. Kil Choo Moon, Chairman of the
Hongneung Forum, stated, "Through cooperation with institutions in the area,
Hongneung will have to play a role as an illuminator, not a reflector, and for that,
it needs to discover its own colors and realize them.”
Dr. Seok-Jin Yoon, President of KIST, commented that
“KIST hopes that the Hongneung area can emerge as the center of Korean
innovation once again through hardware remodeling, which has unlimited potential
in the biomedical field, as well as software remodeling.”
The Hongneung Forum came about in 2012 as a forum for discourse on science, technology, culture, and educational innovation, and a place for the 18 research, education, public, and private institutions in Hongneung to discuss the region's development and social impact on S&T, the economy, society, and the arts.
