2019 Workshop on Capacity Building in S&T Policy Formulation
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) invited 14 Vietnamese government officials to participate in the Workshop on Capacity Building in S&T Policy Formulation which will be held at KIST’s Seoul headquarters on November 13-20.
The workshop has been hosted by KIST since 2015 to help developing countries advance their S&T and enhance their research capabilities through lectures, field studies, and the generation of action plans. This year, 14 Vietnamese government officials will learn about Korea’s S&T policy development process, and share experiences about the role of Korean government during the establishment of KIST, strategies for S&T development, and know-hows about nurturing S&T personnel.
This workshop is the 2nd workshop taking place for the government officials working in the S&T related government organizations during 2018~2020. It especially focuses on deriving strategies for development of S&T policies and successful management of VKIST (Vietnam-Korea Institute of Science and Technology) by analyzing S&T policies and systems of both countries.
Through this process, the workshop is expected to contribute to country’s S&T development by formulating action plans that emphasize strength of each countries’ S&T policies, and to offer a stepping stone of diverse S&T cooperation including VKIST.
Dr. Lee Byung Gwon, the president of KIST, stressed that “KIST expects to lead the engine of Vietnamese S&T, and further contribute to realize Korea-ASEAN future community.”
Participants in past workshops include officials from the Ethiopian Ministry of Science and Technology (in 2015); S&T officials and researchers from Ecuador, Paraguay, and Peru (in 2016); professors from World Bank’s African partner universities (in 2017); and Vietnamese officials from S&T-related government organizations (2018). In particular, in the workshop held in 2017, KIST agreed on establishment and management of exchange of personnel and joint research scholarship program with 4 African universities belonging to World Bank. Under this program, 4 students in Ph.D enrolled in KIST School in 2019.
