Dr. Yoo Young Sook Designated as Fifth Chair of Climate Change Center
KIST announced on
January 13 that one of its principal researchers, Dr. Young Sook Yoo, a former
minister at the Korean Ministry of Environment, was designated as the fifth
Chair of Korea’s Climate Change Center.
A resignation
ceremony for the outgoing Chair and former National Assembly member Dr. Chang
Hee Kang, and inauguration ceremony for Dr. Young Sook Yoo, were conducted
together at “Dalgaebi,” a conference space located in Jeong-Dong, Jung-gu,
Seoul. Ten members of the board of directors, including the advisor for the
Climate Change Center, Dr. Keon Ko (Head of the Asian Forest Cooperation
Organization and former Prime Minister of Korea), and the Chair of KAIST, Dr.
Jang Moo Lee, were in attendance for the event.
In her inaugural
speech, Dr. Yoo said, “I have been attending the UN Conference on Environment
and Development every year from when I started serving as minister all the way
to last year. I am well aware of trends in the international community and the
seriousness of climate change.” She added, “As the Analects of Confucius
teaches us, I will respond wisely and effectively to the challenges Korea faces
regarding climate change in such difficult times, and look to further new
growth engines and demonstrate global leadership beyond in climate change
alone.”
Dr. Yoo graduated
from Ewha Womans University and earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Oregon
State University. She has held various positions in her research field,
including Center Head, Director, and Vice President, and has been a principal
researcher at KIST since 1990. She was the fourteenth Minister of the Korean
Ministry of Environment, from 2011 to 2013, and has been serving as Founding
President of the Korean Bio Fuel Forum since 2019.
The Climate Change
Center was established in 2008 as the first non-profit, private climate change
organization. It has concentrated on enhancing our ability to cope with climate
change and realizing a low-carbon society through the solidification of the
Climate Change Center as part of the global climate change network with the
participation of the government, industries, academia, and the general public.
