KIST's Brain Science Institute Holds 4th Joint Brain Institute Research Outcome Exchange
On November 29, 2022, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Seok-Jin Yoon) held the 2022 Joint Brain Institute Research Outcome Exchange at its headquarters, together with the Korea Brain Research Institute (KBRI; President: Pann-Ghill Suh) and the Institute for Basic Science (IBS; President: Do Young Noh).
The event, which marks its fourth anniversary this year, was attended by more than 50 researchers and officials from each institution, including Jin Hyun Kim, Director-General of KIST's Brain Science Institute, Pann-Ghill Suh, President of KBRI, and Changjoon Lee, Director of IBS's Center for Cognition and Sociality. Each institution presented on a pertinent topic, with KIST announcing major achievements on the "Diagnosis/Treatment of Mental Diseases by Age by Social Stress," KBRI presenting on its "Study on Neuropsychiatric Disease and Stress Recovery Mechanism by Social Stress," and IBS presenting its "Investigation of the Effects of Non-Voluntary Social Relationship Reduction on Brain Function." In addition, a meeting for planning next year's research took place, with discussions being held on ways to revitalize cooperative research in the domestic brain research ecosystem.
Jin Hyun Kim, Director-General of KIST’s Brain Science Institute, which organized the event, commented, "We hope that this performance exchange will further strengthen cooperative research between our three brain research institutes," and added, "We plan to continue to pursue joint research that can produce public-inspired research results in the future."
In 2017, KIST, KBRI, and IBS concluded a business agreement, and have been leading Korea's brain science research ecosystem by conducting joint research according to the basic plan for promoting brain research since 2018. In particular, independent tasks for each institution are jointly organized and operated under the theme of Overcoming Mental Diseases Caused by Social Stress, a common problem in our daily lives in the COVID-19 era that has been drawing attention as a social problem.
