State-of-the Art Capabilities of City Center Become the Heart of Innovation
On November 25, 2022, a ceremony was held to commemorate the opening of a permanent office for the Hongneung Forum (Chairman: Kil-Choo Moon) at Seoul BioHub in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, for the purpose of developing a social model that can connect regional development and national innovation. The opening ceremony was attended by Chairman Moon and other Directors from the Hongneung Forum, in addition to other representatives and officials from member organizations, and featured discussions about the role of the Hongneung Forum and potential opportunities for cooperation with central and local governments.
Consisting of universities and public and private institutions in the education, S&T, and culture sectors, the Hongneung Forum was launched in 2012 to explore regional and national innovation discourse based out of the Hongneung area of Seoul which goes beyond institutional and field-based boundaries. Dae-Whan Chang, Chairman of Maekyung Media Group, laid the foundation for the operation of the Hongneung Forum, while former Minister of Environment Myung Ja Kim focused on promoting the Forum’s active cooperation with Hongneung institutions and attracting projects to revitalize the Hongneung area. Kil-Choo Moon, the 5th Chairman of the Forum, is currently working to promote cooperation between member organizations by sector, fostering bio talent and start-ups, encouraging communication between S&T and art, and exploring opportunities for cooperation with the city of Seoul. Through such cooperation, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Hongneung Region Urban Regeneration Project and Ministry of Science and ICT's Hongneung Innopolis Project were able to be secured in collaboration with local governments and member organizations.
The 15th Hongneung Forum is set to be held at the Korea National University of Arts on December 16, 2022, following the completion of the official approval and corporate registration process with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, and the office that opened today is expected to be a hub for contact and communication between local institutions and members. The Hongneung Forum will serve as a platform for combining its potential with the growth and competitiveness of the Hongneung region and the country by harnessing the capabilities of companies and talents in the area as well as Forum members.
As many as 20 universities, hospitals, and research institutes are located within a two-kilometer radius in the Hongneung area, signifying its status as a representative urban innovation cluster with more than 7,000 doctorate-level talents and 120,000 college students.
Hongneung Forum Chairman Kil-Choo Moon remarked, "As Korea's first research complex, Hongneung has served as a national think tank for the past half-century," adding, "We will promote voluntary exchanges and cooperation between universities, research institutes, public institutions, and cultural organizations in Hongneung and present an agenda for the region’s growth."
