KIST Signs MoU with ROKN
- S&T to play an increased role enhancing the Korean navy
On September 28th, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) signed an MoU with the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) to cooperate on force improvement and defense R&D.
As a result, KIST has agreed to provide ROKN with defense consultations and technical support, while ROKN agreed to fully support KIST in conducting military R&D.
KIST President Lee Byung Gwon stated that the MoU would strengthen cooperative ties between research institutes and the Korean military, as well as promote increased national security and various other public interests.
From its inception, KIST has worked to develop national defense-related technologies such as firearms, radios, patrol boats, and a bomb disposal robot. Recently, KIST successfully completed two defense R&D projects: one on metallic fuel cells for next-generation military radios, and the other on a system for tracking ammunition shot from M61 Vulcan Gatling guns.
This year, KIST used its own funds to launch six new K-DARPA projects in hopes of providing the military with practical prototypes by year’s end.
