Seoul BioHub Fosters Global Bio Startups With Switzerland's Basel University
On August 29, Seoul BioHub, jointly consigned and operated by KIST (President: Seok-Jin Yoon) and Korea University (President: Dong-one Kim), announced the commencement of the "Seoul-Basel Startup Hub Acceleration Program," which aims to recruit participating companies to strengthen the capabilities of startups in the biomedical sector to enter the global market, in collaboration with Switzerland’s Basel University.
The recruitment field for this program will focus on two areas: Oncology and Immunology, with five companies planned to be selected.
Basel University is a world-renowned university in the field of biotechnology that has been carrying out R&D collaboration with major global pharmaceutical companies such as Roche and Novartis. This program, jointly planned and managed by the Basel Innovation Office and Seoul BioHub since 2022, is at the center of Korea’s industry/academia/research network and startup support organization under the jurisdiction of the President of Korea University.
Reflecting on feedback from the previous year’s participating companies, the plan for this year's program was to select twice as many companies and separating the program into two halves. The first half of the program concluded successfully with five companies (Near Brain, WellC, Seven Point One, Bionsight, and Portrai) participating in the fields of digital health and innovative technology.
Companies for the second half of the program will be selected through written and presentation-based evaluations, and throughout November, will participate in detailed online and offline programs tailored to each company, such as coaching and business networking from Swiss and European market experts.
Notably, during the two-week offline program, the Basel Innovation Office will provide participating companies with accommodation and office facilities so that they can fulfill their work activities while taking part in the program.
To participate, biomedical startups based in Seoul that are less than 10 years old and aiming to enter the overseas market were required to submit an application and other required documents through the Seoul BioHub website (www.seoulbiohub.kr ) by August 29.
Located in Hongneung, Seoul, Seoul BioHub is a hub for bio and medical startups created by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and managed by KIST and Korea University, which provides support to startups in key bio sectors, such as medicine, medical devices, and digital health. Seoul BioHub operates programs to assist biomedical startups with early growth, offering consulting, mentoring, education, investment attraction, open innovation with global pharmaceutical companies, and overseas expansion services.
