KIST & Isu Chemical Form Partnership to Lead Industrialization of Green Bio
On December 14, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Seok-Jin Yoon) announced that it had held a signboard ceremony to commemorate the establishment of a Linking Lab joint research and development program with Isu Chemical (CEO Seung-Ho Ryu) at the KIST Gangneung Institute of Natural Products (Director General: Joon-Yeon Chang).
Under the Linking Lab Program, KIST and dispatched researchers from companies with demand for a particular technology aim to jointly promote the rapid commercialization of said technology through the establishment of a joint research laboratory at KIST. So far, KIST has created and run a total of five Linking Lab joint research labs, and it now seeks to commercialize cutting-edge technologies in areas such as bio/medicine and materials science with local SMEs.
In line with this, Dr. Chu-Won Nho's team at the KIST Smart Farm Research Center established a Linking Lab at the KIST Gangneung Institute of Natural Products to develop smart farm-based functional natural products production and raw materials standardization technologies.
KIST and Isu Chemical seek to discover high-value-added materials for natural products by targeting the green bio industry, which presents various added value creation opportunities, by applying biotechnology to bio resources such as natural products. Furthermore, the project will be carried out for two years, with the goal of establishing an optimal production system based on smart farms and developing an industrialization platform for the standardization of natural raw materials.
"While basic research has led to some degree of industrialization, the main obstacles to this have been the divide between companies and research institutes when it comes to technologies which are in demand by the markets, as well as communication issues," said Seok-Jin Yoon, President of KIST. "KIST will spare no effort to help bridge the gap between research outcomes and industrialization and maximize the possibility of industrialization."
"So far, we have been able to secure not only greenhouse-based smart farms, but also plant factory-based smart farm technologies, so we are looking to expand our business portfolio," said an official from Isu Chemical's Green Bio Business Division. "We aim to enhance our competitiveness in facilities and materials through Linking Lab and grow to become an export industry in the future."
