Quantum Technology Scholars to Gather at KIST
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Seok-Jin Yoon) and Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS; President: Hyun-Min Park) will host the Single Photon Workshop (SPW) 2022, a world-renowned global workshop on photon-based quantum technologies, at KIST for 5 days, from October 31st (Monday) - November 4th (Friday).
SPW 2022 is the tenth installment in a series of workshops commenced in 2003 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States. While previous workshops have been held at various national research institutes and universities throughout the U.S. and Europe, SPW 2022 will be the first to take place in Asia. Single-photon technologies play a critical role in quantum communication and quantum computing research, and the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to researchers in the field of quantum entanglement for their groundbreaking experiments with entangled photons, signifying the growing importance of this emerging field. As the first gathering of global experts in quantum research since the Nobel Prize announcement, SPW 2022 is expected to play a major role in fostering research sharing and collaboration.
Paul G. Kwiat (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), aworld-renowned scholar in the fields of quantum communication and quantum computing, will open the workshop with a lecture on “entanglement-enhanced attosecond-scale time-of-flight measurements.” This will be followed by sessions covering various fields, such as photon quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing, single-photon emitters, photon detectors, and more. Among the 200 global researchers in academia, industry, and research from the United States, Europe, and Asia expected to attend the 5-day workshop are Chao-Yang Lu (Quantum Computing, University of Science and Technology of China), Andrew G. White (Quantum Optics and Quantum Information Processing, University of Queensland), and Robert Thew (Quantum Communication, Université de Genève).
