AVS: Bringing the Differing Perspectives of Scientists and Artists Together
KIST (President: Sang-Rok Oh) announces that the “Artists’ View of Science: Perspectives of Artists on Science 2023-2024” (AVS) exhibition, hosted in collaboration with the Soorim Cultural Foundation (Chairman: Gyu-Hak Choi), will be held from April 12th to May 18th at two locations in Seoul: Soorim Cube in Jongno, and the Kim Hee Soo Art Center in Dongdaemun.
Since 2019, KIST and the Soorim Cultural Foundation have been jointly hosting the AVS exhibition, which brings together science and art. Following on the previous themes of “Used Future” in 2019, “Disaster Sensibility” in 2020, “Data Garden” in 2021, and “Natural Replica” in 2022, this year marks the 5th year for AVS, which showcases content representing the fusion of science and art through collaboration between scientists and artists with the goal of popularizing science.
This year’s expanded AVS will feature simultaneous exhibitions at Soorim Cube and Kim Hee Soo Art Center. At Soorim Cube, under the theme “Tomorrow, Again, Tomorrow,” three teams of artists who participated in AVS 2022-23 will showcase their previous works, as well as new creations that continue on or are evolved from their previous concepts. Among the three works on exhibit, two of them have been created by KIST scientists and artists working in various fields.
The exhibit at Soorim Cube connects to and expands upon previous AVS exhibitions, which sought to explore attitudes which need to be adopted beyond the binary thinking of humans and machines in the age where artificial intelligence has become part of our daily lives. In particular, this year's exhibit looks at concepts such as the “humanness” that needs to be discovered anew and the “naturalness” created by the framing and standardization created by humans in the modern era.
At the Kim Hee Soo Art Center exhibit, under the theme “Assemblage: Assembled World,” the meaning of the “convergence” of science and art will be revisited. Exploring the differences between science and art while presenting various collaborative processes between scientists and artists, it seeks to discover new meanings and possibilities in the place where the two fields intersect. Four works will be exhibited, involving teams of scientists and artists from the Korea Institute for Advanced Study.
Commenting on the event, KIST President Sang-Rok Oh stated, “Despite having different perspectives, I believe that science and art have the potential to complement each other and develop together. Through this exhibition, we hope that many guests will come and gain new inspiration by developing a deeper understanding of and experiencing the beautiful world created by the collaboration of science and art.”
