KIST Europe in Germany Signs 2 Agreements to Serve as R&D Outpost for International Cooperation in Science and Technology
- KIST Europe and the Korea Basic
Science Institute (KBSI) signed an agreement to promote EU international
collaborative research networks
- The agreement specifies international
joint research project plans between KIST Europe and KBSI and cooperation areas
- KIST Europe and the Korea
Environment Corporation (K-eco) also signed an agreement to promote joint
research in the field of environmental risk management
On October 23, 2023, KIST Europe and
the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI) announced that, using their respective
research capabilities, they were planning to promote international joint
projects in two cooperation areas with the participation of global research
institutions from 2024, and agreed to develop detailed plans for the projects
over the next two months. Based on these collaborative activities, a business
agreement was signed to expand and promote international joint research.
The agreement signing ceremony and selection
of the cooperation areas were held via video. Through a preliminary research
and selection process that took into account KIST Europe and KBSI's excellent
research capabilities, two topics were finally selected as cooperation areas: 1)
environment and bio; and 2) all-solid-state electrical materials and
next-generation energy. In addition to conducting mutual researcher exchanges,
the two institutions will also share various research infrastructure to promote
practical cooperation.
The specific themes introduced for
the selected cooperation areas were: 1) “the development of on-site sensors and
portable measuring devices for uranium in water environment as part of
countermeasures against environmental radioactive substances,” a tangible issue
for the general public; and 2) the establishment of a Korea-EU international
research consortium aimed at developing mature all-solid-state battery
technology, and “the development of core technologies for improving the energy
density of all-solid-state batteries” for selection as a Horizon Europe
project.
In addition, on November 10, 2023, KIST
Europe also signed a business agreement with the Korea Environment Corporation (K-eco)
to promote international cooperation in the field of environmental risk
management. The contents of the agreement with K-eco include the integration of
KIST's core competencies in non-animal-based environmental safety and risk
assessment systems, monitoring equipment and smart sensors that support
real-time analysis for air quality management, and environmental management
fields such as animal testing alternative methods development, air quality
management, and indoor environment management, as well as the promotion of
mutual joint research to implement integrated environmental risk management.
Along with the conclusion of the agreement, its scope
was also further refined through information sharing and detailed consultations
between the two organizations on their research and business areas, and
practical discussions were also held on response strategies and future
implementation methods for raising awareness among public authorities and
consumers in Europe about the European Chemical Management System (REACH Regulation)
and the Animal Testing Alternatives Act, in addition to integrated
environmental risk management.
