Prof. Sei Kwang Hahn of Pohang University of Science and Technology Wins 24th Songgok Science and Technology Award
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Dr. Seok-Jin Yoon) announced that Dr. Sei Kwang Hahn, Professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH; President: Dr. Moo Hwan Kim), was selected as the winner of the 24th Songgok Science and Technology Award. Prof. Hahn will be awarded 20 million won at the opening ceremony for KIST’s 56th anniversary celebration, being held at KIST’s headquarters on February 10.
The Songgok Science and Technology Award was established
in 1999 to commemorate the achievements of “Songgok” Dr. Hyung Seop Choi, the
founding president of KIST who also served as Korea’s Minister of Science and
Technology. The Award honors those scientists and engineers who have developed
world-class new materials or who have greatly contributed to the development of
Korea’s national S&T sector and industrial economy by suggesting academic
research and research management related to national S&T policies.
Prof. Hahn’s is responsible for the successful commercialization
of four smart nano-pharmaceuticals using biomaterials, and is also promoting
commercialization of the development of gene-modified stem cell treatments for
incurable diseases using bio-polymer hydrogels. In addition, he has contributed
to the academic and industrial development of next-generation smart wearable
medical devices by developing smart contact lenses equipped with a drug
delivery system for diagnosing diabetes and treating complications. Based on his
innovative convergence research in areas such as smart wearable medical
devices, he was ultimately selected as the recipient of the 24th Songgok
Science and Technology Award for his valuable contributions to the academic and
industrial development of next-generation smart medical devices and the bio-medical
field.
Prof. Hahn commented, "The smart contact lenses we’ve developed can measure a diabetic patient’s blood sugar and even administer medication.” He also stated that “We will continue to develop technologies that can simultaneously diagnose and treat various diseases through convergence research on new materials and smart wearable medical devices."
