KIST to Unveil the World’s Second Room Temperature Portable Quantum Computer at the 2021 Korea Science & Technology Fair
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Dr. Seok-Jin Yoon) announced that it would take part in the 2021 Korea Science & Technology Fair, being held for three days from December 22 at KINTEX.
The Korea Science & Technology Fair was organized by National Research Foundation of Korea and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity in order to bring together innovative S&T achievements and share the importance of fostering state-of-the-art national technologies. KIST will showcase nine research outcomes at the exhibition, including a room temperature portable quantum computer (Dr. Sang Wook Han, Principal Researcher), the world’s first sodium ion secondary battery utilizing salt-based electro-chemical activation (Dr. Kyung Yoon Chung, Head of the Energy Storage Research Center), and a rapid non-face-to-face robot system for automated sample extractions (Dr. Jongwon Lee, Senior Researcher).
Of particular note, KIST has put together an exhibit in
collaboration with KRIS, ETRI, SKT, and Sungkyunkwan University's Quantum
Information Research Support Center to promote the research outcomes and
visions of industry, academia, and research institute members from the quantum
technology sector. Unlike other quantum computers, which are only able to run
at cryogenic temperatures, KIST has developed the world’s second (following
China) quantum computer that can operate at room temperature and standard atmospheric
pressure, made possible due to the computer’s diamond NV center qubit.
"The KIST quantum computer being unveiled at this
exhibition was developed with a user interface that can be used by the general
public," said Dr. Sang Wook Han, Head of KIST’s Center for Quantum
Information. "Currently, the only chance to experience quantum computers is
overseas at places like IBM and Amazon, but the public will soon be able to experience
quantum computers developed using our national technologies."
In addition, at the R&D Hall, KIST will reveal several
new COVID-19 response technologies, including a rapid non-face-to-face automated
robotic sample extraction robot system and remote monitoring system for treatment
equipment used with isolated patients in critical care, as well as innovative
technologies such as an intelligent product transfer system and a delivery
robot system.
KIST President Dr. Yoon stated, "Although this science & technology fair is being held under difficult circumstances due to COVID-19, I think it will be an opportunity for the public to clearly recognize the importance of science and technology. As has been the case so far, KIST will continue to express its willingness to take the lead in researching advanced science and technology.”
