2021 Seoul S&T Forum
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Dr. Seok-Jin Yoon) held the 2021 Seoul S&T Forum at The Plaza Hotel in Seoul on November 2. This year’s Forum, sponsored by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT; Minister: Dr. Hyesook Lim), hosted by the National Research Council of Science & Technology (NST; Chairperson: Dr. Bok Cheol Kim), and organized by KIST and the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI; President: Dr. Mi Ock Mun), was held under the theme, “Research Paradigm Shift for the World After COVID-19,” and served as a platform for the sharing of data-based R&D knowledge and strategic methods between researchers in the global community.
The event was held in a dual online/offline format, with more
than 50 domestic speakers and notable guests attending in person, while the overseas
speakers and various attendees from both Korea and abroad took part online via YouTube.
In his keynote speech, “AI for Science: Transforming Scientific Research,” Dr.
Tony Hey, senior data scientist at STFC-UKRI’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, spoke
about the impacts of AI and machine learning technology on the S&T field. Afterward,
several presentations and a panel discussion were held on various topics, including
data-based R&D policies and establishing a smart lab environment, featuring
experts from several government-funded research institutes, including KIST,
STEPI, KISTI, KAIST, UC Berkeley, and Japanese institute NIMS.
The Chairperson of the NST, Dr. Kim, said in his opening
speech, “Recently, research has been shifting to become more data-oriented,
which not only reduces costs and time, but also provides opportunities for new
challenges," and added, "I hope this forum will help establish a
direction for data-oriented R&D development and further contribute to
solving global challenges."
In his welcome speech, Dr. Yoon, President of KIST, said,
"We hope that this forum can help us find solutions to global problems
such as climate change and infectious diseases by providing us with the wisdom
and experience needed for exploring data-based R&D's possibilities and
utilization strategies, and serve as a guide to the development of the
field."
The President of STEPI, Dr. Mun, commented on "the
efforts and direction being made to revitalize the ecosystem to utilize data,
such as the implementation and management of R&D, and policy planning
discussed in this forum” and promised to “work with various government-funded
research institutes to establish a data-based R&D ecosystem for science and
technology innovation."
Marking its eighth anniversary this year, the first Forum coincided with the 2010 G20 summit held in Seoul, and it has since become a venue for domestic and international leaders from various S&T fields, policy-makers, and administrators from international organizations to participate in discussions on resolving global issues through science and technology.
