KIST Gangneung Hosts the 2016 Korea-Italy International Symposium
- A forum on natural food and pharmaceutical research and technology
- Global cooperation/networking through international joint research
On Wednesday, November 16, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)’s Gangneung Institute of Natural Products joined with the Italian Embassy in Korea to hold the Korea-Italy International Symposium. This symposium, which focused on industrialization methods for natural products, took place in the Convention Hall at KIST’s Seoul headquarters.
Held under the auspices of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, as well as the National Research Council of Science and Technology, the symposium aimed to vitalize research into functional foods and pharmaceutical ingredients in Korean and Italian natural products, and to strengthen global networks for international joint research. Included among the 100 attendees were Indena S.p.A., an internationally renowned natural product company; major universities and research institutes from both Italy and Korea; and experts from various pharmaceutical companies. Of particular note was the fact that Indena, with over 90 years of experience in researching natural products, sent its research director, Paolo Morazzoni, to participate as a featured speaker.
Congratulatory messages by Italian Ambassador Marco della Seta, KIST Vice President Lim Tae Hoon, and HUONS Vice President Choi Soo-young marked the beginning of the event, followed by technological presentations by Korean and Italian researchers that triggered spirited discussion. Professor Francesco Canganella, science and technology advisor to the Italian embassy in Korea, delivered the closing address, and afterwards all attendees were invited to dine at the Ambassador’s residence.
KIST Gangneung Director Oh Sang-rok said, “The Korea-Italy International Symposium provides momentum for researchers in our two countries to strengthen global cooperation and networking in the field of natural products research and technology. It also enables KIST Gangneung to grow as a world-class research center adept at handling basic studies on natural products as well as the industrialization of these products. Next year’s symposium will be held in Italy―further enhancing the network between Korea and Italy.”
