Council of National Research Institutes Holds 2nd General Conference
- Sharing Jeju Island’s vision for the future -
The Council of National Research Institutes held its 2nd general conference at Jeju’s Ramada Plaza on June 24 and 25.
At the conference, heads of national research institutes held in-depth discussions on major issues in the science and technology field and introduced to each other the recent events and challenges that their respective offices had met with. In particular, Jeju’s governor, Won Hee-ryong, presented the Korean island’s vision for the future under the theme ‘Carbon-free Island’. Director Kim Jeong-hak of Jeju’s Provincial Government provided the detailed actions plans.
On the second day of the conference, the council members visited local R&D centers operated by the Korean Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, the Korea Institute of Energy Research and the New and Renewable Energy Promotion Hall of Jeju Energy Corporation. They were given a tour of the energy and climate-related research institutes and explored opportunities for furthering collaboration among member organizations.
Council Chairman Lee Byung Gwon, president of KIST, has emphasized the need for everyone in the S&T field to put their heads together for realizing the visions and policies of Korea’s central and local governments as we enter into the paradigm-shifting period referred to as the 4th Industrial Revolution. He also stated that the general conference was organized so that heads of national R&D institutes could improve their understanding of climate-related policies and current R&D activities.
The Council of National Research Institutes is a consultative body established in 1994. It consists of 50 national R&D institutes in the science and technology field and forms a collaborative network among member organizations for developing policy alternatives.
