KIST Shares Expertise with Central and South American Countries
- Training program held for civil servants and researchers from Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru -
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) offered a training program to disseminate experience gleaned from Korea’s unprecedented economic growth and the outcomes of KIST’s own establishment. Civil servants and researchers working in the science and technology field were invited from three Central and South American nations (Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru) to participate in the program, which was held June 22 - 28.
These three Latin American nations have actively participated in KIST’s annual Science Minister Conference for Developing Countries, and have shown particular interest in Korea’s model for rapid economic growth, which relies on science and technology as the primary driving forces. Thirteen civil servants and researchers were recommended for the training program by their nations’ embassies in Korea.
Participants attended lectures on the history and development of Korean science and technology, as well as the establishment of KIST and its day-to-day operations. The attendees visited the Daeduk Research and Development Area, as well as the headquarters of several Korean businesses. Korea’s rapid economic growth and the founding of its state-owned R&D institutes offer valuable lessons for developing nations when it comes to facing such common challenges as industrialization, the nurturing of basic technologies and the training of key human resources.
In 2015, KIST provided a training program for civil servants in Ethiopia. Through this program, KIST actively promoted ODA projects such as the ongoing project to establish a version of KIST in Vietnam (V-KIST), which aims to foster international S&T exchanges with developing nations.
