2016 Seoul S&T Forum
- Fostered discussions on current S&T issues under the theme, “Science, Technology, and Innovation for Better Life”
- Attracted 250 attendees from 44 different countries, positioning Korea as a global leader
On October 27 and 28, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) held the 2016 Seoul Science and Technology Forum (S&T Forum) at the Plaza Hotel in downtown Seoul.
Organized by KIST, the National Research Council of Science & Technology (NST), the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI), the Green Technology Center (GTC), and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), and sponsored by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and YTN Science, the forum was held under the theme “Science, Technology, and Innovation for a Better Life,” and it attracted 250 attendees from 44 different countries―including leaders of foreign and domestic research institutes, government officials, staff members from international organizations, and experts in relevant fields―to discuss current S&T issues pertaining to sustainable development and climate change.
The Seoul S&T Forum was first held in 2010 (the same year that the G20 Summit was held in Seoul) and is recognized as one of the nation’s key S&T forums. Over the past six years, it has served as a platform for public research institutes and international organizations to discuss important global issues, thereby positioning Korea as a leader in world events.
The forum consisted of three sessions titled “GRIs Taking New Directions,” “Shared Growth via Science, Technology and Innovation(STI) ODA,” and “Building Bridge for Batter Climate Technology Cooperation.” S&T-related dignitaries visiting Korea from developing countries were invited to attend Day 2 of the forum, which introduced Korea’s policies on climate technology cooperation and its successful outcomes from operating joint projects with developing countries, giving insight into how climate technology cooperation between Korea and developing countries might be enhanced.
KIST President Byung Gwon Lee stated, “I believe the Seoul S&T Forum will streamline discussions on improving quality of life by developing new science and technology and contributing to strengthened cooperation between internationally renowned research institutes and policymakers.”
