KIST accelerates effort to develop quantum computing and ANN simulation technology
ORP is an open research and convergence study program aiming to resolve critical issues in the Korean society and to secure future growth engines. KIST takes in charge of raising the fund and its allocation and selects outside experts as chief researchers, building dream teams composed of the world’s class specialists at home and abroad. The institute named Prof. Myungsik Kim of Imperial College London and Dae-Shik Kim of KAIST as chief researcher of quantum computing and simulation of Artificial Neural Network (ANN), respectively. KIST plans to allocate about 60 percent of the total fund to domestic and overseas participants of the program.
* Quantum computing: Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS), Seoul National University, Korea Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS), Hanyang University, POSTECH, Korea University, Ajou University, Korea Advanced Nano Fab Center (KANC), Pusan University, University of Waterloo, Yonsei University
ANN simulation technology: KAIST, Seoul National University, POSTECH, Kookmin University
In 2015, KIST designed the program in order to find an uncharted research area and to discover future growth engines differentiating itself from other government funded projects. The institute newly secured the research fund for 2016 to develop quantum computing and artificial neural network simulation technology by actively making efforts to persuade the government and the national assembly.
President Lee Byung Gwon presented the vision of “Beyond MIRACLE” commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of KIST during the event. He said, “I (Information) represents both quantum computing and ANN simulation technology that will lead the post-digital era. I consider that these innovative areas will determine the next 50 years of Korea. The research fund project is carried out as an open research program and KIST will continue to make efforts to realize the achievement in shortest time period by fully utilizing domestic and overseas research talents.”
As KIST embarks on the two research projects, it expects that Korea will compete with Technologically Advanced Countries such as the US and the UK, and both are already heavily investing in quantum computing and Artificial intelligence (AI). KIST also forecasts that these projects will serve as an opportunity to expand the domestic research base in corresponding areas which are studied sporadically in small scale up until now.
