On February 10, Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST, President Lee Byung-gwon) held a ceremony to commemorate the 49th anniversary at its headquarters in Hawolgok-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, which was attended by approx. 500 dignitaries, officers and employees.
President Lee Byung-gwon suggested new roles of KIST for the next 50 years, saying “KIST will lead the innovation of R&D so as to identify new research themes responding to the calling of our times and people’s expectations, and will create tangible outcomes to be recognized by the nation.” With the 50th anniversary coming around next year, KIST disclosed the emblem of the 50th anniversary and conferred awards to outstanding departments and employees.
As part of its efforts to innovate R&D, KIST launched Post-Silicon Semiconductor Institute & Robotics and Media Institute in January this year and has improved the operating system of research projects and evaluation methods. In addition, KIST will fully cooperate with the government on its plan to establish the “Global Complex of Creative Knowledge and Science” in Hongrung, Seoul, so that the birthplace of Korea’s science and technology, Hongrung, can become the center of technology once again.
KIST has exerted leadership focusing on harmony and co-prosperity in order to foster a platform of convergence and cooperation among universities, businesses and government-funded research institutes. KIST has also aggressively participated in various activities, such as the V-KIST project, in order to assist developing countries to build a brighter future.
Founded on February 10, 1966, KIST has been the trailblazer of national R&D activities aimed at meeting the callings of the times, which included the modification of advanced technologies and the development of high-tech, core technologies and source technologies. Commemorating the 50th birthday in 2016, KIST is now gearing up for a new challenge to become a key R&D institute in the world, beyond Korea.
