KIST Europe (Director Lee Ho-seong) of KIST joined hands with the Korea Institute of Human Resources Development in Science and Technology (KIRD, President Ryu Yong-seop) in order to embark on a new initiative to cultivate global talents in the field of science and technology.
KIST Europe, located in Saarbruken, Germany, signed the Educational Cooperation Work Agreement with KIRD for the purpose of nurturing global talents in science and technology through cooperation between Korea and EU. The signing ceremony was held at KIRD on May 13.
The two institutions agreed to work together to promote R&D activities to address pending social issues, technology commercialization education to spread research outcomes and research cooperation with global research institutions. Under the agreement, they will jointly carry out a range of activities to enhance mutual collaboration, including △ share space for education and training, △ jointly develop programs, △ exchange advice and information, and △ push for further cooperation in other areas.
In accordance with the Agreement, the two sides will operate the “Korea-EU Innovation Academy" for science and technology workforce of the two nations starting September this year. They already collaborated on an educational program conducted at KIST Europe last year, where experts from key EU organizations introduced the R&D program of EU to officials in charge of international cooperation at state-run research institutes and universities.
Now that the Agreement was officially signed, KIST Europe and KIRD will start to implement cooperation programs in a full-fledged manner. The focus of educational cooperation this year will be technology commercialization for disseminating research outcomes, business start-up by researchers and government’s support policies.
Director Lee Ho-sung of KIST Europe said, “The collaboration of the two institutions will provide science and technology workforce with opportunities to participate in various education programs of EU and cultivate R&D experts in Europe. By doing so, we hope to invigorate cooperation on science and technology between Korea and EU and contribute to the realization of creative economy through dissemination of R&D results.”
