KIST Europe (Director Lee Ho-seong), an overseas branch of Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) located in Saarbr?cken, Germany hosted the “Korea-EU Nano Workshop” from October 15 to 16 under the theme of “Future Materials and Safety” in cooperation with INM-Leibniz Institute for New Materials and gwSaar Saarland Economic Promotion Corporation.
The objectives of this workshop were to enhance cooperation between the Korean government sponsored research institute and the EU in terms of nanotechnology, one of the hottest technologies in the world, and to keep current with the latest trend in nanotechnology. This workshop encompassesed various research areas including nano-materials, nano-medicine, nano-pharmacy, and the stability of nanotechnology.
This workshop was very meaningful for the fact that the government of Saarland (Saarbrucken is the capital of the state of Saarland) was one of the sponsors of the workshop. Saarland has a cluster of research institutes and companies specializing in materials (including Leibniz INM, research institutes that specialize in new materials, and auto parts companies). The workshop was a good opportunity for Korea’s nanotechnology to be reassessed by the companies and institutes in and around Saarland.
The workshop was a valuable venue for key researchers from the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB), Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), and Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) to present as speakers. In addition, experts from INM-Leibniz Institute for New Materials, Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research (MPI-FKF), Saarland University, Public Research Centre Henri Tudor (TUDOR) in Luxembourg, and KIST Europe also presented their work.
On the first day, Joachim Maier, who is a director of Physical Chemistry of Solids at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research delivered a keynote lecture entitled, “Size Effects on Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage.” On the second day, Professor Rolf Hempelmann at Saarland University, who leads a nano-electrochemistry research group, l delivered a keynote lecture entitled, “Electrocatalyst?Membrane Interface and Fuel Cell Performance with Sulfonated PolyEtherEtherKetone as Ionomer.”
The workshop consisted of five sessions: Nano-materials, Nano-biology, Stability of Nanotechnology, Nano-interface, and Nano-pharmacy. Each session was designed to ensure both Korean and EU researchers can freely communicate with each other and to promote active exchange of opinions concerning common research fields. On the next day, discussions on the establishment of separate consortiums to develop various research themes shared by Korean and EU researchers was held, and each research group had a tour of laboratories in local research institutes.
Director Lee Ho-seong of KIST Europe said, “This Korea-EU Nanotechnology Workshop will be a valuable opportunity to increase joint research between the Korean government-sponsored research institutes and the EU research institutes. We hope that KIST Europe will be the Korea’s research center in Europe.”
