Professor Morinobu Endo of Shinshu University was appointed as an Advisor of international expert on carbon nanotubes. He is often mentioned as a prospective winner of Nobel Prize in Chemistry or Physics. He will be collaborating with the Research Institute of Technology for Composite Materials at KIST Jeonbuk (Director Hong Kyung-tae), a provincial branch of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), to become the global market leader in carbon nanotubes.
KIST appointed Professor Morinobu Endo as Special Global Advisor to KIST Jeonbuk on August 26. Professor Endo will split his research time by staying in Korea for four months out of the year and lead joint research in the development of carbon-based superconductors, nano-bio materials, and energy storage. To attract scientists with the capacity to establish research foundation and facilitate major research projects, KIST Jeonbuk organized a search committee to seek out talented manpower in research. As a result, Professor Morinobu Endo was chosen due to his accumulated experience in carbon tubes as well as the fact that he is one of the early pioneers in carbon tubes.
Born in Nagano, Japan in 1946, Professor Endo is one of the globally renowned leaders in carbon materials. He majored in Electrical Engineering at Shinshu University and also obtained his master’s there as well and then moved on to receive his doctorate at L'Universite D'Orleans, France. He synthesized carbon nanotubes through a catalytic chemical vapor deposition technique, which uses metal nanoparticles and successfully verified the structure of carbon nanotubes.
He has honorably received many awards, including Charles E. Pettinos Award and those from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Materials Research Society of the US and the Japanese government. In addition, he was an awardee of the 2012 NANOSMAT Prize, which is given to those who have shown outstanding achievements in the fields of nano-science and nanotechnology.
Branch Director Hong Kyung-tae said, “Joint research projects with Professor Endo will enhance the competitiveness of KIST Jeonbuk in the carbon composite materials research and further, through this collaboration KIST Jeonbuk will lead the global market for carbon composite materials by securing creative and innovative source technologies for materials.”
KIST Jeonbuk was established in 2008 with the goal of developing source technologies for convergence materials, supporting local businesses, and nurturing relevant professionals in line with the objectives of KIST Jeonbuk to promote strategic industries in Jeonbuk or North Jeolla Province. Since then, the Branch has achieved many research achievements within a short period of time. Employing Professor Morinobu Endo will be a foothold for the Branch in leading the global market for research and development of advanced convergence materials and parts.
